The repo is using develop and master branches to do development and releases.
Microsoft VSTS DevOps has adopted Release Flow which I believe will simplify development and release cycles. Also, for external collaborators it means less branches as there will be only upstream/master and origin/master, rather than upstream/master, upstream/develop, origin/master, and origin/develop. This also allows simpler patch releases for earlier versions (if required).
