Open source mentors provide student fellows first hand open source experience through working on ProgramEquity’s project Amplify via pair hours, career-related and technical workshops, and content labs

Is this for me?

This might be for you if you ...

  • Have patience for folks from extensive backgrounds learning curve around open source and webapps
  • Enjoy or would like to expand your knowledge of VueJS
  • Would like to contribute to open source projects impacting sustainability from an advocacy perspective

How it Works

Mentors run 10 week long sessions for MLH Fellows with weekly Workshops on various engineering topics and Pair Hours where students work with mentors on the Amplify app

We look for 10-12 people to be mentors for Pair Hours and 25-35 people to present workshops for each 10 week cohort.

💻 Pair Hours: weekly sessions for an hour to help students review code or resolve bugs and good first issues/batch issues 🍎 Workshops: a 30-45 minute presentation with an interactive review or q&a
⏰ Time commitment: 3.5 hours
  • Orientation/Async enablement (30 minutes)
  • To ensure continuity, please sign up for at least 3 sessions (3 hours)

    Stack: Working with APIs such as Twilio, Lob, Cicero

    • 🏗 OSS Architecture/DevSecOps: CodeQL, GitHub Actions, Heroku, Codespaces
    • 🖼 Frontend: Vuetify, Bootstrap
    • ⚙️Backend: VueJS, Node, Express, PostgreSQL
⏰ Time commitment: 3 hours per topic
  • Spend an hour crafting the workshop with our Advocats enablement team
  • Deliver the topic to students:
    • ⚙️ technical topics around appdev
    • 🎤 content and dev brand
    • 💼 career advice

How do I get involved?

Sign up to mentor here

  1. Check out the workshops and/or pair hours schedule and reach out to the person listed in the DRI column if you have any questions.
  2. Sign up and reference the workshop or pair hour in the google form. (You’re welcome to submit a workshop you didn’t see listed)
  3. (1-2 hours) You’ll be added to our #advocats-enablement channel to coordinate content and presentation partners.
  4. (30 mins) Schedule with DRI to finalize content async or via dress rehearsal
  5. (60 mins) Present day of to students
