I think it makes sense to add table.getGlobalFilter() that returns current filter value; also to extend table.setGlobalFilter() to call shouldAutoRemoveFilter that inside calls autoRemove and in case of true set global filter value to undefined or empty string (something similar to what resetGlobalFilter do).
This modifications will make global filter API look and feel more like column filters API.
Example:
