Seems like the backlight device for this panel only ever sets the gamma and doesn't send MIPI commands to enable / disable it fully. It does do that in the DRM device's enable/disable functions though. The best solution would probably be a refactor to take advantage of https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-renesas-soc/patch/20191207140353.23967-3-sam@ravnborg.org/#23054195 and let DRM manage the backlight device for us.
