I had wasted hours trying to make bootable ESXi 6.6 USB using other guides I found.

Holding down Option key and rebooting MacMini did NOT show the USB device until I used your guide.

Your guide worked great!

  1. Press power and immediately and hold down Option key
  2. Select the yellow and aluminum EFI boot disk and install ESXi

@rreichel002 I am glad this issue helped you find the fix from @cbednarski

My manager approved purchase of a VMware vSphere Essentials Kits. Now I must figure this out all over again and hope my MacMini host host will be happy.

I will keep the USB @cbednarski helped make in case I must roll-back!

I use two Synology NAS device as ESXi datastores, each one has mirrored 3.5" spinning HDD. While they are not lightning fast, they are surprisingly usable and reliable for hosting Windows and macOS build slaves for building software releases.

Thanks @cbednarski ! Surprisingly this still works like a champ burning ESXi 7.0.2 via a Monterey computer.
