This is somewhat related to leap-stc/leap-stc.github.io#67. I think it will be very useful for us to have some metrics of who uses the catalog/dataview/stories and how.

The simplest metric would probably be visits to each site.

But in particular for the catalog, I would love to be able to tell which datasets are most visited/copied/shared. Is this achievable together with leap-stc/data-management#136 @andersy005 ?

i just made some changes to the catalog which will allow us to track individual feedstock cards. now users should be able to share links to individual cards (for example: https://catalog.leap.columbia.edu/#noaa-coastwatch-geo-polar-sst). these changes should be enough for us to get some metrics from Google analytics in the meantime.

i'll confirm whether this is working as expected or not by next week

Amazing! Is there a way to get a "share" button that creates such a link?

Done! the latest deployment has a "share" button which copies the link to user's clipboard

it appears this isn't working as expected :(. i'm not sure if i've done something wrong but Google doesn't seem to record events associated with the anchors. I found this stackoverflow comment which seems to confirm my suspicion.

In short, Google Analytics can't track on-page links containing a '#' character. A click on index.html#foo is treated simply as a click on index.html, with everything after the '#' ignored.

i'll investigate to see if there's any workaround
