From using this app for about a year now, I think that it mainly lavks two things:

Intuitive and clear auto-upload filter, combined with a file manager and a gallery

So, as a basis, I think that the main app should be usable without having a Nextcloud server. Imo ot should be a fully functional file manager whith clear indicators for each file and folder that are or will be uploaded to the server, and every one of these entries should have an expandable options list for how automatic uploads should be handled (no auto-uploads, all, everything since a specified date). Also you should be able to upload individual selections, with the folder structure automatically being recreated, or manually place it elsewhere in the process. You should be able to decide what happens with folders and files on content changes and presence both on device and cloud (If I delete a file locally, should it be on the cloud and vice versa; what happens if a file gets added to the cloud? What happens when the files change their contents?)

And, on top of all that, you should be able to clear files from local storage, but still be able to browse those as if they're on the device, again, with clear indication to each file, where it is stored.

Same for a gallery functionality. I want to be able to quickly access all of my photos and videos (which includes having a preview as soon as possible), without all of the files being present on the device.

Imo this app would be muuuch more comfortable this way, than it being mainly a uploader in the case the device gets lost.

If you disagree, I'd love to hear as to why.

Best regards.

GitMate.io thinks possibly related issues are #3693 (Gallery), #3109 (Ability to mount the files as external storage), #2952 (Can't edit text files with external app), #3419 (After uploading a file from external memory, can't upload from internal memory anymore.), and #3695 (Improve Navigation Header Layout).

This already works: for images only a preview (~50kb) is downloaded to cache and videos are streamed by default

The app aims to be a full replacement of the web ui, with e.g. notifications, activities, …
