Reverts #313 based on group discussion prior to the release. We're likely bumping versions, but it's unclear to what version.

Once reaching a decision, we can use the PR as a reference for the changes needed.

The revert here is straightforward, which I tentatively approve, but I don't know the impact on other code changes made to this repository.
