It wasn't entirely clear to me that step #3 and beyond in the README was for the client.
I followed step by step and was confused by the repetition of steps done in 1-2 being done again on #3.
This is because it is supposed to be done on the client.
They are in a sense a different set of steps, though you should set the gateway first.
Different ways to organize it, but a simple header should avoid this confusion quickly.
