How I got GOG commandos running in oracle cloud for free forever using an x86 instance of ubuntu
- Install GOG Commandos Ammo Pack. If you haven't already, download both of these files to the same place, then run the executable:
- https://www.gog.com/downloads/commandos_behind_enemy_lines/en1installer1
- You will need to be logged into GOG and have purchased commandos ammo pack for this to work
- Go to https://signup.cloud.oracle.com/ to sign up for a free account
- You will need to fill out all of your details and provide a credit/debit card (which will only be charged a small amount to check it's legitimate and then refunded)
- Create a new instance, make it VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro running Ubuntu 22.04
- Have it generate an ssh key and download it, or upload your own key
- To create one on your machine, run ssh-keygen and accept all the defaults
- Wait for the instance to be created and note the Public IP address
- Open https://cloud.oracle.com/networking/vcns
- Select your VCN, Public Subnet, Security List, Add Ingress rules
- Source CIDR = 0.0.0.0/0
- Destination port range = 4321-4322
- Add Ingress rules, then repeat but with IP Protocol UDP
- cd into C:\GOG Games\Commandos
- On your machine run: scp -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa .\mpserver.exe ubuntu@<instance Public IP address>:/home/ubuntu
- ssh <instance Public IP address> -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa
- sudo apt install --install-recommends wine
- sudo iptables -I INPUT 6 -m state --state NEW -p tcp --dport 4321 -j ACCEPT
- sudo iptables -I INPUT 6 -m state --state NEW -p tcp --dport 4322 -j ACCEPT
- sudo iptables -I INPUT 6 -m state --state NEW -p udp --dport 4321 -j ACCEPT
- sudo iptables -I INPUT 6 -m state --state NEW -p udp --dport 4322 -j ACCEPT
- wine mpserver.exe
- Run commandos on your machine. If you get an error about directx5 either rename comandos.exe to commandos.exe or run comandos_w10.exe
- New Game, Multiplayer Game
- Put the <instance Public IP address> as the multiplayer server
- If you can connect, congratulations, it has worked! If I've missed any steps, please feel free to raise a PR or issue
