Versification in Serval

What is Versification?

Versification is the specification of the verses in a specific publication of a Bible and how it differs from the base, original versification of the original source texts. In Paratext, versification is specified primarily by a .vrs file (see all files here and brief descriptions here).

Versification Alignment in Serval

When a pair of Paratext project backup zip files are uploaded to the Serval API and made into a parallel corpus, the project's versification specification is used to align the verses of each Bible for training and pretranslating. This alignment is done through SIL.Scripture.

If there is a verse span in one of the Paratext projects, the corresponding verses in the parallel text will be combined for both training and pretranslating. Note that there is a character limit for each segment of pretranslation drafting which may lead to truncated results or very poor drafts when many verses are combined.
