Feature Request

We already have a sidebar menu item for favourites. So let's add "unread messages" underneath!
mockup - unread

This is related to, and maybe an easy way to fix: #2433 and #679

(+) easy to understand for users
(+) maybe easier to implement than other filterbar solutions that have been discussed
(+) In my personal workflow I often want to look at unread mails only, this would make that possible. It will also make it easy to search in unread mails.
(-) it is then not possible to filter by unread and starred mails.

Potentially you could also add "has attachment" as a menu item.

How about making it more generic and more useful as described in #3742 (comment) ?

Ideally we could have custom user filers, yes.

@dumblob yours is about the dashboard, mine about the web app. IMHO adding it to Dashboard is cool, but adding it to web app is a must have.

This proposal is a low hanging fruit.

Of course I would prefer to have a quick filter bar (filtering for read/unread, starred/unstarred, has/has no attachment) like in Thunderbird #2433
There is also a proposal to change sort order (read/unread, starred/unstarred, ...) but I prefer the quick filter because it can do multiple things at once (filter for starred and unread), which the sort order can't #679
But no one seems to have time/skill to do any of these, so I wrote a proposal here that is (probably) faster to implement.

yours is about the dashboard, mine about the web app.

Just to clarify, my proposal is solely about the web app.

I fully agree that low hanging fruit shall have precedence. My proposal is rather about "how to present" the concept and not about replacing other IMHO less related functionality (quick filter bar, change sort order).

Btw. Horde (as the NexctCloud Mail underlying library if I'm not mistaken) does support virtual folders based on searches, so my proposal shouldn't reinvent the wheel and just "aggregate" this horde functionality from multiple accounts.

Wohoo, we have a "unread mail" dashboard widget now #4124 (this discussion here got a little sidetracked because of this).

@ChristophWurst @kesselb @miaulalala

What do you think about this idea to add "unread mail" underneath "favourites" in the sidebar (see mockup at the top)?

e.g. if you don't use the dashboard...

I like it, IMHO it would be useful.

I would much prefer this as opposed to the Dashboard widget. I don't want to go to the Dashboard just to see my unread emails, it's not UX design.

Can you please triage this idea? And remove "to triage" label? @ChristophWurst @GretaD

@miaulalala think's its good #3420 (comment)

At the moment the only way to see unread emails is the dashboard widget. This issue was submitted two years ago and I still think it's a neccessary feature 🚀

New: I have mail 2.2.5 now, in advanced search you can tick "marked as unread".

Thats good, but I still think there should be "unread messages" as an item in the sidebar (like "favorites").

Please triage this idea.
